This thrust builds workforce capacity through community development, curriculum innovation, and broadening participation. Activities include annual workshops, a new graduate semester course and textbook on sustainable computing, modular course units for existing curricula, and summer schools for students from underrepresented institutions. All seven partner universities contribute to a coordinated broadening participation plan.

Key Research Questions

  • What pedagogical approaches teach students to reason about environmental trade-offs across the computing stack?
  • How can sustainability modules be integrated into existing CS and engineering curricula at scale?
  • What community structures most effectively broaden participation in sustainable computing?
